To apply for a driver licence, you need to go to a driver licensing agent so that they can verify your identity, take your photo and signature, and take payment to process your application. This process cannot be done online.
3. Can I drive with my overseas driver licence in NZ?

You can find a list of driver licensing agents and relevant information on the AA or NZ Transport Agency websites. The AA and VTNZ are the only driver licensing agents in New Zealand that offer driver licensing services on behalf of the NZ Transport Agency.
7. Can I take the learner licence theory test online?
You need to come in person to a driver licensing agent to have your application processed and complete the theory test on-site. The theory test cannot be done online.
8. Can I book a driver licence test online or on the phone?
You can book a restricted or full licence test on the NZ Transport Agency website, but you will still need to visit an AA or VTNZ driver licensing agent to have your identity verified, your photo and signature taken, and your payment processed. Learner licence theory test bookings must be made in person at a driver licensing agent.
9. How do I convert to an NZ driver licence?
If your licence is from an exempt country, you may not need to sit any tests to convert it. If your licence is from a non-exempt country, you will need to pass both a theory test and a practical driving test.
10. Can I convert to an NZ driver licence without a test?
Whether you need to sit a theory test and/or practical test depends on where your licence was issued, when you obtained it, and the class of licence you are converting.
